- client pops a vacancy in your lap (with minimal work on your part),
- perfect candidate is actually already on your books and you've been in recent touch with them,
- candidate interviews perfectly,
- job is fulfilled,
- client is happy!!
It's exhilarating isn't it?? You're on fire, it lifts your mood, you feel 10 feet high - can you see why it's easy to become addicted to the EASY placement?! But it's a trap, because the error we make is that we keep chasing the 'high'.
We cold call company after company, we amass CV's so that our real and virtual filing cabinets are bursting - then we spray our clients with a bunch of applicants hoping for the kick of the Easy Placement. Instead of playing strategically, we play the numbers game - tell ourselves it's just a matter of having enough. Enough candidates, enough vacancies - we struggle to find more and more to fill that pipeline, when in effect what we are doing is filling our pipeline with noise!!
Gone are the days of the 'Lazy Recruiter'
The market is different now - 10 years ago the lucky placement was enough for recruiters to get by, but these days there are more HR managers, more awareness of company obligations and employee rights. Companies use In-house 'recruitment' as they have lost the trust in the Recruiters as being the experts.
Most recruiters tell me the same thing, their biggest objection is that companies are handling it in-house. I believe this is because clients have lost faith in our expertise. The mistakes of the numbers game and the easy placement are catching up with us.
So what can we do to build our business?
These days, to be a successful recruiter, you actually have to change the way you work.
Welcome the 'Smart Recruiter'
This is the recruiter that people want to work with! This is the recruiter who will successfully fill the positions to the mutual benefit of their client AND their candidate! This is the recruiter who understands that it is not a 'numbers' game of checkers, but instead it is a strategic game of chess!
Come along next week and we'll discuss how easy it is for you to become the Smart Recruiter and build your pipeline with active business instead of 'noise'!
