In the current unstable job environment many employees are wondering how to ensure their job security. The simple fact is that many businesses in Australia are finding it hard at the moment. Recently I have read articles that state the last financial quarter has seen the biggest losses for small business in over 16 years and recently a report claimed that SME’s have suffered the worst financial year in 30 years. The sad fact is that many businesses have had to cut back on staff to survive.
In my experience as a manager, the last person to be cut is the one who is versatile, dedicated AND looking to make their way up in the company.
Who is suited to promotion?
Firstly, businesses will NOT promote the employee who just ‘does their job’. Employers are interested in those staff who can find a positive, who motivate others, those who are team players and those that are predominantly interested in the success of the company as a whole. If you are in a job where you are unhappy, you’d be better off looking elsewhere – managers don’t want to keep whingers or people who stir trouble.
How do you let your manager know you are wanting to make your way up the ladder?
You need to look at this from a very practical standpoint. It is not enough to simply tell your manager you are keen to be promoted within the company – anyone can say the words!
If you are genuinely interested in growing within a company, you should be able to demonstrate how you have successfully mastered your current role – write down your achievements beside your job descriptions. You should also demonstrate where you have gone above and beyond!
Have a general idea as to where you want to go – eg: if it is management, be prepared to demonstrate how you can facilitate team activities and complete projects as a team player. Show how you can be directive AND lead by example.
Finally, ask what skills and abilities you need to improve upon to be considered for growth within a company AND LISTEN!! Too many people are all happy to point out their skills and abilities, but are unable to see how they can improve on their weaknesses.
PS: remember that none of the above counts though unless you show the attitude and aptitude to be part of the success of the company!
