There is no denying the power of the internet and all things mobile – in fact we have built a successful job site based simply on the demand for job vacancies and the ability for job seekers to apply quickly and easily online!
In this current world of instant gratification, there are some critical mistakes that MANY job seekers are still making. We’ll tell you how to avoid the top 7 mistakes, so that you can be the front-runner when you apply for your dream job!
- Outdated resume data – in this day and age, everyone should have a CURRENT resume. In fact if you keep your resume up to date with the skills and experience in your current job, you will find that it is much easier to keep on top of your resume when changes occur! Take 10 minutes once a month to make sure your skills and experience are up to date!
- Old fashioned resume – if you are on the job hunt, take the time to google some current resume formats. They have changed in the past few years and if your resume starts with ‘My goals’ you can almost bet you are going to the round file! You may even decide it is worth a couple of hundred dollars to have a professional service update your resume for you – if you can justify a new interview suit, I think you can justify the tool that will get you to the interview!
- Not following instructions – now when you are using www.JobEzy.com.au you can opt to just send your stored resume straight from our system – very quick and simple!! BUT if the job vacancy requires a cover letter and you don’t complete one – no amount of saving time is going to get you to the head of the pile. Make sure you understand the instructions for applying!
- Lose the glitz! – unless your industry is graphic, interior, or fashion design (etc), the pretty tizzy stuff actually distracts from what is important! Don’t get me wrong – make sure your formatting is neat and clear – make sure the important information is easy to access and the overall look is pleasing to the eye; but don’t forget that professionalism is more highly regarded over bling!
- Be professional – no matter what generation you are from, we all have our ‘isms’. Drop the emoticons and sms speak; spell check AND grammar check. Leave off your Facebook profile, but feel free to include your LinkedIn profile!
- Be confidential – just be careful!! In our current ‘oversharing’ lifestyle, make sure your FB friends don’t blab that you are on the hunt for a new job – block your boss, or better still, keep the job search close to your chest; otherwise you might just find that your current employer will think you have already checked out and beat you to your resignation.
- Finally, FOLLOW UP – yes, you would be surprised at the LACK of candidates that actually make the effort to follow up their job applications! Keep a note, word doc, spreadsheet so that you know when and what you have applied for – wait a few days and then follow up!
